How hormones affect weight loss - Will Insulin cause weight gain?

Emily De Luzy

Higher levels of insulin in the bloodstream signal the body to store more fat.

One of the most common conditions suffered by women is Insulin resistance. A condition where the cells in the body become less sensitive to insulin.

One of the defining characteristics of this condition is weight gain, particularly around the belly.

The good news is that you can reverse insulin resistance without having to turn to medical advice! And it’s easy to implement!

If you are overweight, the chances of suffering from Insulin resistance are as high as 70-80%. Or if you have PCOS or are perimenopausal they can be as high as 65%

But what are some of the signs of insulin resistance?

  • Weight gain. Particularly around the belly area.
  • Extreme thirst or hunger.
  • Feeling hungry even after a meal.
  • Increased or frequent urination.
  • Tingling sensations in hands or feet.
  • Feeling more tired than usual.
  • Frequent infections.
  • Evidence in blood work.

What role does insulin play in the body?

When it comes to hormones. Understanding what they do & why they affect our weight so much can sometimes be like reading a foreign language.

Simply put, insulin opens the door for blood sugars to leave our bloodstream and enter the cells in the body where it is needed most, lowering blood sugar levels.

What is insulin resistance?

This is the condition whereby the cells become less sensitive to the levels of insulin in the blood, stopping it from doing it’s job in allowing the sugars out of the blood into the cells. Leaving blood sugar much higher than normal, restricting your metabolism.

With a substantially high blood sugar level, the pancreas produces even more insulin in order to overcome the resistance it meets. This has the unfortunate side effect of telling your body to store fat. So not only do you store fat, you get a significantly reduced energy benefit from the food you do eat. This creates the perfect storm of hunger, low energy levels and fat-storing signals that make weight gain so easy.

What causes insulin resistance?

As discussed earlier in the article, if you are overweight, in perimenopause or have PCOS, it is highly likely that you may suffer from insulin resistance. But you don’t have to be any of these to be under its effects.

Inactivity and a poor diet (low in nutrients, high in sugars, processed foods) are 2 of the biggest contributors to insulin resistance.

What can I do about it?

Here is the great news. You can reverse insulin resistance (increase your body’s cells' sensitivity to insulin). And it doesn’t involve medication or restrictive fad diets where you starve yourself and live on a diet of salad leaves.

If you believe your weight is contributing to insulin resistance, a sensible calorie-restricted diet that is high in nutrients, and low in processed foods and sugar will be necessary to lose weight.

When it comes to stimulating your cells, exercise is the golden ticket. Along with a calorie deficit, it will help the body lose weight, but crucially, it also has the added benefit of causing the muscles to become more sensitive to insulin and allow them to open the door to receive the sugars from your blood!

So, will insulin cause weight gain?

In some circumstances, yes, but if you can implement holistic easy to manage changes to your lifestyle, you can stop insulin resistance in its tracks & even reverse it.

There is no magical cure or fad diet. Investing in your body by means of changing your lifestyle is one of the best things you can do.

It may not feel easy at times, but the rewards for the effort will last a lifetime. A more toned body, more energy, fewer hunger pains & cravings, not feeling tired & lethargic... The list goes on.
